Francis De Groot, on horseback, at the ceremonial opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge (1932). He made his way through the crowd of people assembled and slashed the ceremonial ribbon to prevent Premier Jack Lang from having the honour. De Groot was a member of the New Guard (loyal to the monarchy) and declared the Bridge open in the name of "the decent and respectable people of New South Wales!" The ribbon was tied back together and the opening ceremony continued as planned. De Groot was arrested and fined £5.
