CreatorUniversity of SydneyDate1932-1933Description
Contains photographs of the construction of the Medical School Laboratory. Includes loosely inserted newspaper clipping "Foundations of new Medical School Laboratory"--Sydney Morning Herald, July 14, 1932 and "New Medical School Laboratory at Sydney University". December 1st 1932 (source unknown). Most photographs are numbered and annotated with orientation, date and time. Photographs show the foundations and building of the New Medical School, the Blackburn Building. For a time the building was referred to as the Rockefeller Foundation Building, acknowledging the grant from the Rockefeller Foundation of 100.000 pounds. Building work commenced in 1931 and was completed in 1933. The location was close to the University's teaching hospital, Royal Prince Alfred. The Government Architect designed the building in an American Art-Deco style. The building housed the clinical school and facilities for teaching and research laboratories and theatres. It included the library, pathology museum and animal house. The Blackburn Building was demolished in 2018 but in its place the Susan Wakil Health Building will now provide for the teaching and research of the Medical School.
