"In the 1920s an appeal was launched for a War Memorial Carillon, which was originally planned for the clock tower, however it was subsequently decided that a separate building, a campanile, or bell tower would be more appropriate. Drawings and plans for a tentative design of the campanile were prepared by Leslie Wilkinson and John Moore.
