Alluvial gold was first discovered near Tambaroora in 1851. Gold was then found in Hill End Creek in 1852 and by 1853 most readily accessible[...]began in the mid-1850s on elevated land near Bald Hill. An unplanned town grew up around the diggings. A formal street plan was laid in 1859. The place was named Hill End in 1867. Reef mining reached a peak around 1872 matched by the expansion of the township. By the end of the 18705 mining activity had dwindled althoug[...]d into the early years of the twentieth century.
