Thomas Parkin's photograph album
Photograph album containing 124 mounted photographs and 7 loose photographs of Thomas Parkin's travels, including to Australia in 1887, and of his home town Hastings, England. Includes photographs of Parkin’s family home, Halton Vicarage, Hastings, which evidently held his remarkable collection of taxidermied birds before he moved to Fairseat, High Wickham.
The album includes (p.18) an original photograph showing spears and waddies from Australia and New Zealand, probably collected by Parkin on his travels there, as well as a stuffed black swan shot by Parkin in Victoria. There are also photographs on board the Sobraon during its final voyage to Australia, showing fellow passengers, the wandering and sooty albatross shot and preserved by Parkin, and the inside of his cabin which he’d decorated as a trophy room.
There are photographs taken after arrival in Victoria including the properties Corinella, Western Port, Koondrook, Murray River, Barragunda, Cape Shank, and Aroona, Toorak. There is also a portrait of Parkin, posing with a rifle, taken by J.W. Lindt.
Fisher Library Rare Books and Special Collections item was formerly owned by Thomas Parkin (with his bookplate) and Allen E. Bax
