Idealist on a rail; Rail box

Details
Date2008DescriptionArtist's statement: Contemporary studio glass is often tied to functionalism and aesthetics. The underpinning philosophy of this exhibition was to significantly alter or extend the perception of a range of everyday urban objects and scenes. My aim was to distance myself from the preciousness of the glass and use its remarkable expressive range conceptually. This is achieved through abstracting existing/readymade glass forms or surfaces or by presenting an object normally constructed from another material in glass, thus changing its meaning. The idea is that you are immersed in “Another Day” when gazing at these works because, elements of what you understand are not normal. The installation takes elements of a skate park such as a lip ramp a rail box and skateboards, all clearly intended for fun. However, a number of elements in the park have been constructed using glass, such as a panel in the ramp, the copings and the skateboard itself. This installation presents conjecture on the notion of real fun verses, ideal fun presented in the media. Are we just conforming to our understanding of what should be fun as presented in the media or can we have real fun? The suggestion in this installation is that the ideal fun is potentially disastrous. Size: 2.24 x 2.87 x 0.70 m. Materials: glass, skateboard trucks, nuts, bolts, acetate, plywood (kiln and hot formed). Image descriptions: Copyright of the artist. Photographer: Greg Piper.
